Strong pelvic health is important in order to maintain an acceptable quality of life. The most important aspect of pelvic health is the pelvic floor. The pelvic floor supports all of the lower organ in the body. Flexibility and strength in the pelvic floor achieved from muscles and ligaments that form the pelvic wall. The pelvic floor can be weakened by pregnancy and childbirth, complication during both, cesarean section, uterine fibroids, smoking, chronic coughing, straining during bowel movements, obesity, unhealthy diet, menopause and hysterectomy. Sometimes just the simple fact of being inactive can cause the muscles to lose tone, strength and flexibility. These disorders often have to have surgery to correct them.

Having good colorectal health can help prevent serious pelvic disorders such as bladder prolapse and uterine prolapse. These disorders seriously effect the ability to lead a normal life. Bladder prolapse occurs when the pelvic floor muscles have weakened to the point that they are no longer able to support the badder. The bladder then begins to droop in four stages from only a small portion of the bladder dropping into the vagina to where the bladder is entirely outside of the vagina. Uterine prolapse most commonly occurs in women who have given birth multiple times. The pelvic floor muscles can be severely weakened causing the uterus to fall into the vaginal canal from its regular place in the pelvic cavity.

To avoid the disorders and other such problems associated with the weakening of the pelvic floor, it is vitally important to exercise properly and have a healthy diet. Not only does exercise benefit the health of the pelvic floor, but it helps in maintaining a healthy weight and improves mood as well. Kegel exercises, also known as pelvic floor exercises (PFE), are the most recommended for maintaining a healthy pelvic floor. These involve contracting the pelvic muscles several times a session, repeating the session at least three times a day. A ball or cone are sometimes used with these exercises. Squats are also beneficial, as they stretch the pelvic floor and strengthen the core muscles. Yoga and pilates are also helpful in strengthening and maintaining the pelvic floor as they strengthen the core and improve the strength of the pelvic floor.

A diet that is rich in a variety of fruits, whole grains and vegetables, avoiding foods high in fat is optimal for preserving pelvic health. The vitamins and nutrients found in fruits and vegetables greatly add to your health. Choosing foods that are rich in vitamins and minerals are more beneficial than supplements, though sometimes taking a high-quality nutritional supplement is recommended. Diets that are high in protein and stay away from processed foods will always help in developing and maintaining muscle tone.

Exercising regularly and having a healthy diet will also aid in maintaining a healthy weight. Having a healthy weight will be greatly beneficial in preserving your pelvic health as well as your overall health. This also can greatly reduce stress and aid in depression and moods.
